Mama Sissoko Segou, Mali
Known as one of the best guitar player of West Africa, Mama Sissoko was born in 1949 in Nioro du Sahel. He was then sent to Bamako to live with his uncle Djeli Baba Sissoko, griot and n'goni player. In 1974, he joined the Super Biton de Ségou as a singer and guitarist. After the Super Biton split up, Mama embarked on a solo career. His album "Soleil de Minuit" was released in 1999. ... more

Awesome Mali music with stunning vocals from Rokia Kouyate and Mahamdou Sidibe. Jazz edge to the brass but nicely restrained. How to pick a favourite track? Muso, with its skipping Mande zouk beat and Rokia's beautiful vocal. Baga Kanjo, the slowly unveiling first track with n'goni, Rokia leading then switching to Mahamadou. Diarabi, has the most perfect balance of n'goni, acoustic guitar, percussion, brass and vocals. You really have to get this one!
